What to do if Windows installation hangs

Installing Windows zavisaє. Windows - mature operating system, and it is usually installed without surprises, but sometimes the installation process hangs. Windows 7.

1. Be patient

The advice is banal, but useful: if the installation freezes, do not rush to worry. Recently, I have often encountered the fact that on brand new computers the installation program stops when it reaches the Windows desktop screen saver. In all cases, the installation renewed itself - sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes after 45.

So far failed to find official Microsoft explanation of the reasons for such a hang.

Screensaver Desktop - the only stumbling block for the installer Windows.

2. Turn off the floppy controller

Although floppy has long fallen into disuse, some manufacturers still provide their motherboards floppy controller.

Recently, I had to deal with the Windows installer hanging for a long time on one of the computers. After disabling the floppy disk controller, the installation went much faster and without delays. Unfortunately, this is not a one-size-fits-all recipe, because sometimes Windows installation hangs even if there is no diskette controller on the motherboard.

3. Check the voltage memory modules

If Windows Setup hangs periodicallyThis can be caused by problems with memory.

Most motherboards provide for the use of memory modules with a voltage of 1.5 V. If the voltage is higher (even if it is not much), the system freezes periodically. However, this does not mean that such memory cannot be used: some motherboards for Intel allow you to adjust the RAM voltage through the BIOS.

4. Try to remove or replace memory modules

As mentioned above, most often Windows installation hangs due to RAM problems. If this is the case, try removing all but one of the memory modules and see if the freeze stops. If this does not help, replace the remaining module with another tested one to rule out the possibility of defective memory. If this does not solve the problem, consult the documentation for the motherboard: it is possible that the memory is running at an unsupported frequency. Even if the module can be installed in the slot of the motherboard, it is not a fact that it will work.

At the same time check and other requirements for RAM. Some motherboards only support modules specific brands.

5. Try using the DVD-drive with an IDE or USB

Finally, another cause hang install Windows can become a DVD drive with a SATA interface. This is not to say that such drives cannot be used, but the problem is that many motherboards have four to six SATA ports for creating RAID arrays. If you connect a DVD drive to one of these ports and try to create a RAID array with fewer hard drives than the motherboard supports, Windows installation may hang. In this case, it is better to use a DVD drive with an IDE or USB interface.
